Jackson County posted an opening Tuesday for residents interested in serving as county mayor.
Jackson County Mayor Bobby Kinnaird died last week of lung cancer. His term runs through the August election. The appointee’s term would end once citizens elect a new mayor.
The position will be posted for two weeks. County commissioners will meet April 2nd to outline the selection process and fill the county mayor’s position.
“If there’s a way you can step up and have some ideas and help us get through, don’t be afraid to contact the mayor’s office,” County Commissioners Chair Randy Heady said.
Any resident can serve, but state law requires a citizen to be nominated by a commissioner.
“You’ll find somebody in your commissioner district and ask them to nominate you for appointment,” Heady said.
Once the nominations are made at the April 2nd meeting, commissioners will consider the candidates based on a system agreed to at that same meeting.
Heady said he has been amazed at how the county staff and his fellow commissioners have worked together following Kinnaird’s death to keep things running.
“A small county, we all know each other, some of us grew up together, and everybody’s stepped up,” Heady said.
