The Wildwood Resort and Marina is doing its part this weekend to keep local waterways clean.
Its fourth annual Cumberland River Compact’s Adopt-a-Stream cleanup is scheduled for Saturday. Wildwood Resort and Marina Co-Owner Natasha Deane said this year’s goal is cleaning about a mile of river front at Granville’s Veteran’s Park.
“Each year, we pick-up about 100 bags of trash,” Deane said. “Several tires, some times water heaters. I know we’ve got a mattress out there right now. So, it makes a huge impact on the way the river presents for our guests.”
Deane said about 60 volunteers participate in the Jackson County cleanup each year. Efforts begin at 11:00 a.m and last until 3:00 p.m. A small lunch is provided to those who register.
“Have a late breakfast and come ready to work,” Deane said. “Bring shoes that can get wet. Work gloves are a good thing to bring. We are going to provide trash bags. We are going to provide grippers. Some go out in canoes and pontoons. We are basically going to go down to India Creek all the way down to Martin’s Creek.”
The adopt-a-stream program is a community effort to keep waterways clean. Deane said the marina is a member to improve the river experience for guests while also keeping the area healthy.
“I do think the trash is less since we have been doing this as an annual event,” Deane said. “But, we also had the tornado that hit, which generated some of the trash for this year. So, I expect we’ll pick up quite a lot.”
The marina won the 2018 Cumberland River Compact award for “Most Volunteers” and in 2019 won the award for the “Most Trash Removed.” Deane said if you want a boxed lunch for the event to RSVP via Facebook or by emailing natasha@wildwoodresorttn.com.
