Jackson County has received about $50,000 in insurance and restitution for the theft of about $25,000 by a former county clerk.
Mayor Randy Heady said the majority of the money will go to unpaid monthly wheel tax payments.
“Because of the missing money in the clerk’s office, we were unable to pay a month and maybe, a little more than a month in wheel tax to the county and also to the school system.”
During Monday’s commissioner meeting, the county moved $40,000 to a budget line to write the county clerk a check to disperse the money. The remainder of the money will go into the county’s fund balance.
“We have a 40 dollar wheel tax in Jackson County with 25 of that going to the county general 101 and 15 goes to the county schools. We were unable to make that payment one month.”
Heady said moving the funds to the budget line through an amendment was the best way to cleanly move the money.
Heady said during the meeting that Jackson County is completely caught up with state debts such as marriage and boat licenses. Director of Schools Kristy Brown was also present at the meeting.
Amanda Stafford pleaded guilty to two counts of theft over $2,500 dollars in May. Over $25,000 was reported stolen. Heady said just over $40,000 was missing overall.
