Jackson County Middle School was in lockdown for several hours Monday after a report of a student bringing a loaded gun to school.
Director of Schools Kristy Brown said the suspicion was reported to a teacher, and the situation was swiftly handled by the school’s Student Resource Officer.
“And the firearm was confiscated and the student was removed from the school by law enforcement and the school was secured,” Brown said. “We did continue having a soft lockdown after that.”
Brown said students remained in their classrooms until around 1:30 Monday.
Brown said while this is not a problem unique to the Jackson County School System, she is thankful the faculty, staff, and students were all safe. She said the school does all it can to prepare for these situations, including with an upcoming safety day for teachers.
“We are really appreciative of the faculty who were keeping the students calm and safe throughout the day I mean those students were in the classrooms for a long time today,” Brown said.
Brown said the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is taking over the investigation.
