The Jackson County Airport will soon expand its number of hangars.
The airport currently has 18 full hangars with a waiting list of aircraft. Manager Jim Young said if the airport gets about 10 more based aircraft, state funding for a fuel farm could happen.
“Working with TDOT Aeronautics, they see that we do have a need to add some more Tee hangars to our facility,” Young said. “Depending on cost, we are looking at another eight to 10 units.”
Young said the Corps of Engineers must approve the project before moving forward. Once approved, the expansion must reach approval from the state.
“We are doing the preliminary studies,” Young said. “We have done the wetland study, and we will have to do a cultural resource study for the Corp of Engineers.”
The project is set to not cost Jackson County. Young said the project will be paid by federal grants and hangar rent. The project will take 90 to 120 days to complete once approved.
“We go through TDOT Aeronautics, and the funding actually come through the Federal Aviation Administration,” Young said. “But, the funds are managed by TDOT. We do have to have a usually five to 10 percent match from the county, and we get out financial resources for the match from our revenue from our hangar rent.”
