The Jackson County Board of Education wants more information before funding a new roof for the Tri-County TCAT building.
The Jackson County School System and Macon County School System each own half of the building. Director of Schools Kristy Brown said her juniors and seniors use the facility for classes like welding and culinary arts.
However, when Macon County sent a bid totaling $275,000, the Jackson County Board of Education had questions.
“I may invite the director of schools from Macon County to come and inform our board of where they are in the process,” Brown said. “Maybe consult even with legal counsel on how to move forward with bidding and sharing a project like this between two boards of education.”
Board of Education Chairman Mark Brown said he would like to see more than one bid and get a chance for Jackson County to provide names of people they use for roof work. The building is in Trousdale County, where TCAT Hartsville offers CTE classes.
“Macon County Board of Education has worked on getting estimated costs of doing that project,” Brown said. “We want to work with them to see if there’s an agreement we can come to, either splitting the cost or see if it is feasible to do the project in the first place. So obviously it’s going to take some collaboration.”
Brown said this would not be a grant funded project, saying it would be money from the system’s capital projects fund. Brown said that Tri-County TCAT currently offers six CTE classes that Jackson County students take.
