The Jackson County Airport is nearing completion with its ten new T-hangars, bringing the airport to a total of twenty-eight.
Airport Manager Jim Young said the buildings should be finished by mid March. Some final paving will be done as weather allows. Young said the hangars will provide extra revenue from rent and allow more people to base themselves in the local area.
“It’ll be beneficial not only to us and people being able to fly and access (the) town of Gainesboro, but also the local airports in the area that have fuel, their fuels sales will increase too,” Young said. “Like Livingston and Upper Cumberland Regional.”
Young said the airport already has people lined up to rent out all of the new hangars.
“We’ve got a waiting list,” Young said. “We’ve got, oh goodness, probably twenty on the waiting list right now.”
Young said the airport is talking with T-DOT’s Aeronautics Division about the possibility of adding a fuel farm to the airport because of the expansion. Young said the next steps for that are to get the hangars open, meet again with T-DOT, determine how much a fuel farm would cost, and then figure out how to finance it.
“We’ve got one of the most scenic and well-maintained airports in the country,” Young said. “I’ve flown general aviation from the Outer Banks to Long Beach, California so I’ve been in a lot of airports and this one’s about as good as it gets.”
