Huff Said Cavs Young To Start Swim Season

The Cookeville High School Swimming Team holds its first meet of the season and Head Coach Greg Huff said this year’s smaller roster is loaded with talent.

Huff said that following last year, he knew this season’s team would feature less swimmers than usual, but noted there is just as much skill. He said it takes dedication to be a swimmer in the Upper Cumberland and that he knows his swimmers put forth a tremendous effort.

“It’s always a big deal for the swimmers to work to try to qualify for the regional meet,” Huff said. “And then we have a couple that we’re looking at that could very well qualify for state.”

Huff said sophomores Lola Furman and Jackson Stinnett have the potential to move past the regional meet. He said both of these swimmers have been aquatic athletes for a while and take the sport serious.

“As kids, they started in the swim program there at the Putnam County YMCA, which has been a great feeder for us,” Huff said. “They’ve just worked hard and I know that Lola did a lot of work on her own and I believe Jackson did too.”

Last year as a freshman, Furman performed well beyond her years and was a mainstay in the top finishers, Huff said. She qualified for the state meet as a freshman and Huff said he expects the same this year.

Huff said senior Sarah Coonce has worked hard to improve and he said that she has a chance to make it past regionals for the first time.
