In Hog-Eye country, the Livingston Academy football program use a weekly practice session they call “Man Up Mondays” to build the character of their players.
Head coach Matthan Houser said assistant coach Mark Ogletree is the teams character coach and he leads the in this “devotional”. He said Man Up Mondays is a cornerstone for the football program.
“Wins and losses are what get judged on yearly and that’s what people are looking at,” Houser said. “But we want to make sure we’re helping to put out young men who are going to be successful in our communities going forward.”
The sessions focus on leadership qualities and about doing things the right way according to Houser. He said what their players are learning is invaluable, both to implement within the football program and in their daily lives.
“Because, that’s a big thing for us, is helping these young men grow,” Houser said. “Making sure that they know that we’re always there for them, regardless of how long they’ve been out of the program once they graduate. That Man Up Monday and what coach does with character education is huge for us.”
The Wildcats continue their character building sessions in the off-season, but Houser said they are just less frequent.
This week the Wildcats have their senior night as they welcome the Cumberland County Jets to Hog-Eye country. Coverage starting on 101.9/AM 920 WLIV at 6:00pm and kickoff at 7pm.
