Hot Weather Packs McMinnville’s Gilley Pool With Swimmers

McMinnville’s Gilley Pool has almost reached capacity several times this week as people try to beat the heat.

Parks and Recreation Facility Manager Michael Benusches said the consecutive days of 90 degree weather has increased use.

“We’ve been jammed pack all day everyday for this week,” Benusches said. “Maximum occupancy is 800 at the pool, and I’m pretty sure we have been close to those numbers at our peak times.”

Benusches said the first week the pool opened, the temperature was in the mid-80’s. Benusches said the pool was busy then, but the sweltering weather sky rocketed participation.

“We make sure all of our life guards are taken care of,” Benusches said. ” We have guard changes every two hours, so we make sure everybody is staying hydrated while on the stand and protected from the sun.”

Benusches said the pool features a zero entry area, spray cannons, water slides, competitive swim lanes and diving boards. Benusches said the department offers season, family passes or you can pay for a single day admission.

“We’re so glad that we can provide such a great amenity and a staple of McMinnville,” Benusches said. “We hope people far and wide come and enjoy the Gilley Pool.”
