The 30th Annual Golf Tournament for Hospice returns to Cumberland County on Wednesday, May 12th.
Players can compete for the chance to win up to $300. Hospice volunteer Sherry Koch has worked with the tournament for 18 years, and said the Cumberland County Hospice is the only non-profit hospice in the area.
“We really do rely on grants, insurance from patients and the availability of people with fundraising from our auxiliaries and the golf tournament from the board of directors,” Koch said.
The tournament aims to raise awareness for hospice care and its benefits, particularly when used earlier in a patient’s care.
“When that happens, the patient gets usually their medications more in order, stabilized, and on a routine basis and a lot of times patients flourish after they get hospice care,” Koch said.
In its 30 years, the tournament has grown in popularity. Koch said in the past they struggled to get people to sign up, but that’s not the case this year.
“Some years we have not had all 36 teams, but the last eight years we’ve had all 36,” Koch said. “As a matter of fact, we had someone send in their money and we had to turn it back and tell them that they were too late, we’ve already filled the whole tournament this year.”
While the tournament is full, Koch said they will gladly accept donations to benefit hospice care.
