Highway 52 Yard Sale Expected to Be Bigger Than Ever

The Highway 52 Yard Sale will make a return for its twenty-first year this weekend.

Macon County Chamber of Commerce Director Brenda Hiett said she expects a bigger turnout than previous years due to missing last year because of COVID. Typically visitors can expect roughly 500 vendors from all over that bring antiques, crafts, food and other treasures.

“We’re getting many, many calls this year and people come from out of state–they come from a lot of places–to the yard sale, they come and stay overnight,” Hiett said. “I think it’ll be big this year because we were not open last year for the yard sale.”

Hiett said space for vendors along Highway 52 is first-come first-serve, and there are no reservations.

Tennessee’s second-longest yard sale stretches 95 miles from Portland, Tennessee to Celina, Tennessee, and includes Clay County, Macon County, and Overton County, among others.

Hiett said to plan ahead where you set up shop, as spaces fill up quickly. She also said to plan ahead if you are planning on selling any food or beverage to make sure it is an approved item. Hiett said that she also suggests talking to business owners that are along Highway 52 to makes sure you have permission to be on or around their property while selling.

“As long as they don’t get on out from the boundary onto the property whether it’s grassland or whatever, they are allowed to set up on the state right-of-way,” Hiett said.

Hiett said that in its popularity, traffic along Highway 52 can be hectic, but there will be detours available during peak times.
