Highland Rim Trail May Be Best For Wildflowers

As summer approaches, wildflowers are coming out in full force along the Highland Rim Nature Trail at Edgar Evins State Park.

Park Manager Brad Halfacre said the unique terrain of the trail makes it naturally suited for more variety in its plant life. Halfacre said the kinds of flowers that appear on the trail are constantly in rotation, with new flowers appearing each week.

“The springtime flowers that we, that folks see, or folks are out looking for, are more dominant on this trail,” Halfacre said. “We have them on all of our trails at the park. This one is just, it’s just one of the best in the Upper Cumberland for seeing different various wildflowers on.”

Halfacre said flowers along the trail include the dwarf larkspur, brown-eyed susans, mayapples, and multiple types of irises. He said the Highland Rim Trail is one of the most popular springtime paths at the park.

“It’s up here at our main park office, where we get a lot of visitors,” Halfacre said.

Halfacre said the trail goes inland more than others at the park due to its proximity to the main office.

“If you look at the map, we’re kind of on a knob, you know, kind of in between two different coves on the lake,” Halfacre said. “And it’s not really an island, but it’s like it’s almost like a small peninsula where the office kind of sits.”

Halfacre said the dutchman’s breeches and squirrel corn flowers are beginning to go off to seed and will not be seen on the trail as much.
