High School Athletic Teams Ready To Return

High school athletes across the Upper Cumberland will begin returning to workouts this week as preparations begin for the fall sports season.

Livingston Athletic Director Bruce Lamb said the sessions provide some normalcy for student athletes.

“[We’ll] bring in small groups and just try to be as normal as we can, but there’s just not not a whole lot they can do,” Lamb said. “There’s no contact or anything like that, you have to keep the social distancing going on so you just can’t do any competitions.”

During this time of year for the football team, players are using the weight rooms and practicing drills. Lamb said team building could be at risk without this crucial bonding time.

Coaches and students are excited to return to normal when the time comes. Lamb said he hasn’t seen most students since March.

“When you’re separated, you lose a lot of that unity that you have, and that’s going to be bigger than anything,” Lamb said. “Knowing the person that’s playing right beside you and knowing what they’re going to do-it’s huge when you’re trying to build a team.”

Lamb said he hopes sport teams can return to normal, but everything is uncertain.

“I just have this feeling that everything is going to be pushed back,” Lamb said. “We’ll have to see how things go, much less, I don’t know what’s going to happen with school. We don’t even know if we’re going to go back to school. I think we’ll give the players seasons, at least partial seasons, but I just don’t know when they’ll start.”
