Registration now open for the LBJ&C Head Start Program’s new school year.
The program designed to provide educational services for kids ages 3-5. The program has existed since 1965 and has 21 locations across the Upper Cumberland. Director Penny Meadows said the program helps kids prepare for kindergarten.
“We are very big on school readiness,” Meadows said. “And trying to help them to, sorry for the pun on words, but get a head start, to be able to be successful in school when they get there.”
The program is free. Meadows said the selection process uses different qualifications such as a child’s age, family status and income, disabilities, and referral documents to qualify children. Meadows said registration is open throughout the year, but if you want your child in the program for the upcoming school year, registering now would be best.
“As much as we can we try to set our calendar similar to the schools,” Meadows said. “We don’t do fall break but we do spring break in unison with the school systems in the counties.”
The program will send letters to the parents if a child is accepted into the program. Orientation for the upcoming school year will be in July, Meadows said. The first day of the year is scheduled for August 12th.
Meadows said she was a Head Start mom and is thankful for the program and as the program’s director, she is returning the favor and helping others.
