Jamestown’s Handfuls of Harvest is providing free daily lunches to raise money to fight hunger in Fentress County.
Handfuls of Harvest Executive Director Sam Wood said the mission of the non-profit is to feed those who need food. Wood said the meals have been very beneficial to those who are homeless or have limited access to food.
“We are doing this on a trial basis for three months,” Wood said. “The board of directors decided this might be a way to raise some extra money to help buy the groceries and pay our cook. We only pay one employee, but I enjoy helping people and this is one way that we could minister in Jesus’s name to the needy in our community.”
The non-profit is offering full meals from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm Monday through Friday across the street from the Fentress County Library. Wood said they do not charge for the meals but they are asking for $10 donations.
“We need at least 25 donations to kind of break even with our expenses,” Wood said. “Food prices of course are going up as we all know.”
Wood referenced the bible verse Matthew 25:35 as to why the non-profit is feeding the needy. Wood said he does not want anyone in Jamestown to be hungry.
“I would hate to see anybody in our community go to be hungry at night,” Wood said. “We have people living in tents, RVs, portable buildings, storage buildings, and even places they don’t have any way to cook a meal. A good hot meal a day would really help a hungry person.”
Wood said everyone is welcome to a meal regardless if they can donate or not. Wood said the trial will finish in December and they will evaluate whether to continue offering the meals or not.
