Habitat And Lowe’s ‘Women Build Week’ Builds Home For Local

Two Cookeville businesses are coming together to build a home for Women Build Week.

The Upper Cumberland Habitat for Humanity and Lowe’s are teaming up to build a house for a family in need.

Habitat Executive Director Pam Ealey said over 200 women raised $85,000 to help fund construction.

“It just gives them an opportunity to show that they can build a home. It empowers women that maybe aren’t familiar with construction skills so it gives them a lot of empowerment. You feel like you’re a part of building our community, and that’s what we do,” Ealey said.

Ealey said the home is for Kayla Jacobs and her three children. Jacobs works for the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department.

This is Habitat’s second full sponsored women built house. Ealey said Habitat has been doing women built projects for over 15 years in the community.

Ealey added anyone can volunteer to help build the house.

“Throughout the event, throughout the 12 to 13 weeks which takes us to build a house, we’ll see at least 200 to 300 different women come though. And other people too, it’s not about excluding the men, it’s about empowering the women,” Ealey said.

The wall raising is March 7 at 8:30 a.m. at 719 Foundation off Garrett Ave. The street will later be named Jake Hoot Drive.
