Group Working Toward State Vet Cemetery

Members of the Upper Cumberland State Veterans Cemetery Association asked the White County Commission for a donation.

Chairman Donna Fare said the goal is to build a state veterans cemetery in the Upper Cumberland region.

“We represent 14 counties in the Upper Cumberland, the 14 counties were identified because we were the farthest from any cemetery in the state of Tennessee,” Fare said.

There’s four state veterans cemeteries, two in Knoxville, one in Nashville and one in West Tennessee. Land has been purchased for a fifth cemetery in West Tennessee.

“Our goal and our charge is to help raise money to buy land and to build a state cemetery in the Upper Cumberland so that our veterans are within a 75-mile range of a state cemetery,” Fare said.

Fare asked the commission for about $20,000, or roughly $10 per veteran in White County. The group didn’t officially respond, but Commissioner Al Klee told her they are aware of the request, circumstances beyond the group’s control interfere with the donation.
