The Sparta White County Little League participating in a grant program that covers registration fees for low income families.
Thanks to the T-Mobile Call Up Grant Program every kid that wants to play can. League President Don Pearcy said families can get up to $150 of fees covered.
“We want every kid to have the opportunity to play baseball,” Pearcy said. “We wish more people would be playing baseball. As the weather turns nice, it’s good to get out, stretch those legs, throw the ball around and learn the game.”
Pearcy said households must receive a government assistance such as Medicaid or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to qualify. Pearcy said current registration fees only cost $85, so almost two players could be covered.
“We as a league and myself as president have no visibility to that other than we get a notification that T-Mobile has approved somebody in our area with the grant,” Pearcy said. “It is 100 percent confidential.”
Pearcy said this is the first time White County has taken advantage of the program. Pearcy said the grant program will supply a debit/credit card for registration use only. Apply at www.littleleague.org/call-up-grant-program.
Registration for the league remains open for four and five-year-old tee-ball, baseball ranging from six to 13-years-old and softball for six to 16-years-old. The season begins this spring.
