Graduated Licenses Help Teens Avoid Distractions

Some students will drive themselves to school for the first time this fall.

THP Lt. Jimmy Neal said Tennessee has a graduated license system for young drivers to help minimize distractions and problems.

“Kids still have peer pressure, they don’t want them getting in the car, radio playing too loud, distracted by their friends in the back, so we watch for that stuff,” Neal said.

The graduated license system means privileges are restricted at certain levels. A 16-year-old driver may only have one passenger, not counting licensed drivers over the age of 21. They may also have siblings in the vehicle. They also cannot drive between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.
