Genesis House Empowering Community Through Free Self-Defense Class

The Genesis House is hosting a free self-defense and bystander intervention class Tuesday.

Rural Outreach Advocate Tracie Davis said the organization has partnered with Alpha Jiu-Jitsu to teach defense techniques through real-life situations.

“The biggest thing is we’ve had individuals who have took the class, because they’ve been attacked before, and their first response was just to freeze,” Davis said. “This helps them to build their confidence.”

Davis said as a domestic and sexual violence program, the Genesis House wanted to provide these tools to prevent another victim. Davis said through the training, participants will leave with basic skills to protect themselves and others.

“We will discuss what bystander intervention is and go through different scenarios and techniques,” Davis said. “Mr. Alan Whited will also go through techniques of self-defense. People will leave knowing how to approach a situation whether they are witnessing somebody being assaulted or if they themselves is being assaulted.”

Davis said registration ends Friday. Contact (931) 881-6913 to reserve a spot. Davis said Instructor Alan Whited has held the free class for several years as a service to the community.

The class will be on May 31st at 6:00 p.m.
