Gainesboro Receives Federal Grant To Improve Flooding Issues

Gainesboro has been awarded a federal grant to answer flooding issues downtown.

Mayor Lloyd Williams said the $500,000 grant will be used for planning and improving storm water mitigation.

“Our local library will flood. Our local Save-A-Lot one of our only two stores in Gainesboro will flood along with some other businesses,” Williams said. “It does get in people’s yards and gets into houses before, so we think this is going to really help us improve that.”

Williams said the city was awarded the grant since it is considered high-risk. Williams said a partnership with Tennessee Tech on the project also helped.

“A couple of years ago we partnered with Tennessee Tech University on our storm water overflow,” Williams said. “We had some flooding problems in Gainesboro. Along with their help, they pointed us in the right direction. We applied for a grant that we just last (Thursday) night found out we received.”

Williams said the next step is to study the areas most in need and prepare to bid the project.

“We are very excited about that,” Williams said. “We are just one of three areas that applied and got it. The others are Bell Buckle and Nashville.”
