Gainesboro has begun a three year project to provide more fitness opportunities for residents.
Chamber of Commerce President Jordan Hunter said a Project Diabetes Grant will be used to upgrade the city park and give adults a new workout area.
“So the City Park is obviously going to get kids more active. It’s going to give them an option to play on an awesome play system in their own city and county,” Hunter said. “But we also wanted to give something for adults, which is where the fitness center came to be.”
The Parks and Recreation board received the $450,000 grant last year. Hunter said so far the old play equipment has been removed and the new system will be installed in July. The brand new fitness center will eventually open up in an existing city building near the park.
“We tried to figure out what was the biggest need and health is obviously the main concern for that grant. We ranked pretty low in the state, so we were trying to figure out how do we offer kids but also adults the opportunity to become healthy,” Hunter said.
Hunter said the work will also include the construction of a new pavilion and repairs to surrounding sidewalks. The new playground should be finished by August, with the entire project coming to an end by June 2022.
