City of Gainesboro approved a some $20,000 change order to move forward with making its city park project more accessible.
Parks and Recreation Director Jordan Hunter said the decision came after last month’s discovery of additional rock that work would put the project over the budget of the grant funds. He said although it would cost more money, the city decided making the whole park accessible was a necessity.
“It’s going to be a pretty cool project and I think it’s going to definitely finish out that area,” Hunter said. “And we’re going to bring some fill dirt to kind of level out the hillside there, it’s kind of rocky where we’ve been doing construction. So they’re going to make it nice and neat and just kind of finish out the project in the last year of it.”
Hunter said the project will move forward with its original specs. Those specs included having a set of stairs and a ramp that goes down from the playground area to the newly-renovated half basketball court.
Hunter said he hopes to have the project completely finished within a month or so.
“And it’s definitely a good thing we’ll be able to move forward making it accessible,” Hunter said. “Obviously you know I understand we have to be smart with stretching those dollars, but I think it will be a benefit to a lot of people, including those disabled folks and even those who use strollers frequently.”
