Gainesboro is applying for a $630,000 Community Development Block Grant to replace a mile of sewer line.
This will be the start of the town’s four mile sewer line replacement project. Town Supervisor Chester Hamlet said some of the sewer pipes are over 50 years old.
“I’d say some of these is where they are put together and they have a leak in them or something or another,” Hamlet said. “I wouldn’t know exactly where exactly because they’re all under ground. But this is necessary, some of this really needs to be replaced.”
Hamlet said the new pipe would follow Murray Street and begin at the sewer plant and end at the Cumberland River.
Engineer Nathaniel Green said during Gainesboro’s Council Meeting earlier this month he expects over 18,000 feet of 6-inch or 12-inch wide sewer line will be needed.
This project comes after the town’s water lines were replaced. Green said Gainesboro was nationally recognized by the SRF program in cutting water loss from 50 percent to 28 percent.
