Crossville’s Avalon Center is participating in domestic violence awareness month by offering a free 12-week online victim recovery program.
The empowerment program provides knowledge and healing strategies for any persons involved with power-based violence. Domestic Violence Advocate LaChelle Lee said starting Monday, will use a combination of video instruction and peer support.
“You do not have to be a primary victim or someone that was directly abused to attend this class,” Lee said. “This class is open for anyone to attend that just want to learn more about it. I definitely think that we live in a society where some people are not as educated about domestic violence and sexual assault as what they could be.”
Sexual Assault Victim Advocate Lacie Norris said the need for a program like this is high. The center covers seven counties and had over 2,000 hotline calls, 400 people attend support groups and almost 2,000 clients.
“We have things from domestic violence 101 and having safety plans. We have things about financial abuse, money management, intimate partner sexual violence, recovery from abuse as a child,” Norris said. “We have knowing your words, self-esteem, coping skills, smart goals, healthy relationships and healthy sexual experiences after sexual assault.”
If a person completes 10 classes, they will receive a certificate. Classes will be held online at this time using freeconferencecall.com. Classes start on Oct. 5th and will be held every Monday from 5-6:30 p.m. CT.
