The new Fred’s Pharmacy store opened in Monterey Friday.
Houston Hales was one of the first customers to stroll through the doors.
“I had been buying from Walmart for a long time, but I had to drive to Cookeville to get it,” Hales said. “It’s nice now because I just drive seven miles to get my stuff instead of 27 miles.”
The 16,000 square foot store will be located next to Dairy Queen and across the street from Volunteer Electric on Stratton Avenue.
The new store replaces a smaller Fred’s Pharmacy that was located on the corner of West Commercial Avenue and South Holly Street.
“The Fred’s on the corner was basically just a pharmacy and had a few items inside, but this is full retail and we have a little bit of everything,” store manager Rodney Johnson said. “If we don’t have it, we’ll try to get it for you.
The first 100 customers received $5 gift cards as they walked through the doors Friday. Johnson said customer appreciation day will be held Saturday and customers will have a chance to win a $25 gift card to the store.
