There will be several shelters open Thursday night in Overton County for those needing warmth from sub-zero temperatures.
EMA Director Chris Massiongale said locations include the Livingston City Fire Department, Overton County Rescue Squad building, the First Christian Church and the Allons radio tower site on Palestine Road.
“Our biggest threat tonight appears to be the 30 to 40 mile per hour wind gusts which will take down tree limbs and power lines,” Massiongale said. “As the need arises, we will open up additional locations.”
Massiongale said the temperatures Thursday will be life-threatening. Massiongale said just 15 minutes in a negative 30 wind chill results in frostbite on any exposed body area.
“It’s a very dangerous time,” Massiongale said. “I hope people heed the warning.”
In Jackson County, the county annex building has been designated as a warming shelter. Cots will be available for sleeping and water will be provided.
It is located at 238 North Grundy Quarles Highway. Jackson County EMA asks to call the shelter at (931) 268-2556 before arriving.
