L.B.J.& C. Head Start searching for retired volunteers to serve as grandparents at locations across four counties.
Foster Grandparent Program Director Cheryl Pack said COVID has dropped participation and with school starting, the need for participants is high.
“They come in and greet the children as the parents drop them off,” Pack said. “And, they may sit and do puzzles with them. Help them how to do scissors and paint. That type of thing. They read to them.”
Pack said a positive mindset and a love for children make for a good volunteer. Pack said someone can work anywhere from 15 to 40 hours a week with positions open in Putnam, Overton, White and Cumberland Counties.
Pack said a person must be 55 years or older and be 200 percent below the poverty line. Pack said the financial aspect is required since volunteers are paid a $3 hourly stipend.
