The former treasurer of White County’s Mt. Gilead Volunteer Fire Department has been indicted on theft of some $73,500.
Brittney Hope Webb stole a total of $45,983 from the fire department by taking cash, making ATM withdrawals, and writing four checks to herself. The theft took place from June, 2020 to October, 2022 when she was removed from the role.
Webb also took some $27,598 from the White County Firefighters Association by gaining access to the association’s bank account. Webb’s former husband served as association treasurer. He did not know of the theft.
“The fire department’s board should take steps to improve its financial practices,” Comptroller Jason Mumpower said in a statement. “These steps must include providing more oversight, requiring supporting documentation for expenditures, and accounting for all fundraising activities.”
The Mt. Gilead Volunteer Fire Department merged its response capacity with the Central View Volunteer Fire Department in 2023.
A White County Grand Jury indicted Webb on one count of theft over $60,000 and nine counts of forgery.
