Former mayor Bill Wiggins among two nominees accepted Monday night to fill a vacant Board of Aldermen seat.
Alderman Charles Looper suggested Wiggins to fill the vacant ward four position. Looper said despite past conflicts, he thinks Mayor JJ Reels and Wiggins can work together to benefit Monterey.
“With JJ’s energy and enthusiasm and so forth and he (Wiggins) having been a mayor for eight years, he could help,” Looper said. “And JJ just admitted he needed help, and that would have been help. So, that is the reason I did it. I thought about it for a long time, cause I knew it was going to be controversial.”
Alderman Amy Martin named former Alderman Rebecca Iaquinta.
The Board of Alderman will hold a work session April 19th to hear from each candidate. They will then vote for the ward four seat during a special called meeting.
During the meeting, Looper made a motion to vote on the candidates. A second was given, but Reels said a notice to fill the seat is required before taking action. After discussion, Looper made a new motion to go forward with the work session and add the vote to a special called meeting agenda for a bid opening.
Starlett Wessels resigned her seat in March. Iaquinta ran against Wiggins for mayor in the past. Reels beat Wiggins in the August 2020 election.
