First Female In Putnam County Earns Eagle Scout

Savannah Buckner has been the first young lady to earn her Eagle Scout in Putnam County.

Buckner said she joined the Boy Scouts of America in 2019 after BSA changed its rules to allow girls. She said her father and her brothers had all participated, and she followed in their footsteps.

“I saw what my brothers were doing, making fires, using pocket knives, learning first aid,” Buckner said. “And Girl Scouts and American Heritage Girls are wonderful programs, but they didn’t capture my heart or my interests like Scouts BSA did.”

Buckner said that she has received pushback as she’s gone through the BSA program, from fellow scouts and adults alike. However, she said it is the adults who supported her through the journey that she focuses on.

“Like my Scout Master Mr. Kevin, he’s the one who supported me the most,” Buckner said. “Along with my mother, and father, and my Assistant Scout Master Anna DuBois.”

Buckner said her best piece of advice to future female Eagle Scouts is to enjoy the process. She said because she had to get her Eagle Scout before she turned 18, her tenure was very rushed.

“The best part of Scouts BSA are the people that I work with,” Buckner said. “I have a troop full of girls who are my life, all of our little friends, and they’re so much fun. And I can’t wait to see what they do. They inspire me more than anything.”
