A fire broke out Saturday morning in Cookeville’s downtown district along East Broad Street.
Cookeville Fire Chief Daryl Blair said the fire at the Sports One store was contained quickly. Crews continued searching for hot spots around 3:00am Saturday morning. Blair said the most extensive damage appeared to be in the area where screening is done at the rear of the facility.
“These old fire walls that were built when this was built, they come through again for us,” Blair said.
Cookeville Fire Department responded to the call at around 12:50am Saturday. Blair said Cookeville Police first received reports of smoke coming out of the front and back doors of Sports One at 42 West Broad Street around 12:30am.
“Our units got on scene,” Blair said. “The guys have done a great job to stop it where it’s at. It appears we do have some spread to adjoining businesses. They don’t appear to be that much at this time.”
Blair said crews also checked apartments on the west side of the facility. Two engines and a ladder truck responded to the scene. No injuries reported.
Damage assessment will continue. Blair said as of 3am, crews had not been able to assess the damage because of structural damage from fighting the fire.
