The Fentress County Sheriff’s Department will soon have a new firing range and training center.
Fentress County Sheriff Michael Reagon said locating the new range in Grimsley is the best option.
“We have to have somewhere to qualify every year,” Reagon said. “That’s mandatory by the state. I believe this will be the best place for us.
The new firing range will be on land leased from Rogers Group is at no cost to the county. The current firing range is on the campus of York Institute. Reagon said one issue is that the department can’t access the range during the COVID-19 lockdown.
“For one thing, you can’t get into or out of it right now,” Reagon said. “Everything is closed down out there right now.”
Reagon said the sheriff’s department is also unable to use the range at York Institute while students are present on the campus.
The Fentress County Board of Commission voted to approve the lease at its Monday meeting.
