Fentress Senior Center Hosts Chili Cook-Off

The Fentress County Senior Citizens Center invites you to enjoy some delicious chili Saturday and support the seniors of the county.

Center Director Kelly Young said the first-ever Chili Cook-Off is a new way for the center to fundraise. Young said she got the idea of a chili cook-off as other senior citizens had done it and were very successful.

“Here at our center, we do not charge our participants anything to participate,” Young said. “So whether that be trips or lunches as long as they are 60 or older they are more than welcome to come in and participate in our center but we do not charge them for anything.”

Young said many senior citizens enjoy the activities at the senior center as it gives them something to do and socialize. Young said raising funds is important as in some cases seniors live on social security and cannot afford to spend money on activities.

“They enjoy the fellowship and of course, it is a perk that they don’t have to worry about trying to come up with extra funds from their monthly money that they get. They are very appreciative but they are also very enthused about where they might get to go and who they might get to go with.”

Young said the cook-off will have 15 entries. Young she was pleased to have so many entries.

“We look forward to having each of those entrants out to where they can show off their chili recipes,” Young said. “We were just really happy to see the amount of people who wanted to participate in our first annual chili cook-off.”

There will be multiple prizes for entries. First place will be awarded $500, second place $250, third place $100, people’s choice, $125, and best decorated booth $50. The event will begin Saturday at 11am.
