Fentress Approves Speed Limit For Black House Mountain Road

Fentress County Commissioners approved a speed limit for Black House Mountain Road.

That after much discussion about safety issues when it comes to offroad vehicles on the road. County Executive Jimmy Johnson said the road will now have a speed limit of 20 miles per hour.

“And hopefully people will respect that and people will slow down and ride their ATVs as the law says is required,” Johnson said. “They will have to use the county road of Black House Mountain to get to it but hopefully they’ll respect it.”

Johnson said this will affect the section of road from Highway 154 to the Pickett County line, where most of the offroad vehicle riding occurs. Johnson said Road Supervisor Daniel Garrison will get to work establishing the signs.

Johnson said he believes this is a good compromise for the residents in the area and those who use the road recreationally.

“But it actually is a safety issue because a lot of people will go back to the parking area and unload their vehicles back there,” Johnson said. “But then you have a lot that will actually unload two miles from the site and drive their ATVs back on the county road.”
