Extension Hosting Beef Summit Tuesday

The Upper Cumberland Extension Team will be hosting a beef summit at the Hyder Burks Ag Pavilion Tuesday.

Van Buren County UT Extension Director Chris Binkley said the summit include information on how to manage your forage through a drought. Binkley said the topic was picked because of last year’s drought but unfortunately enough the topic is even more prevalent this year.

“Now the last few weeks we are back into those same drought conditions and we have a lot of cattle producers and farmers who are struggling with forage and you know, how to protect that forage, and basically how to get that forage to come back for next year.”

UT Beef and Forage Center Director Dr. Bruno Predreira will be speaking and giving tips on protecting crops. Binkley said they host a beef summit every year as beef cattle is a big part of the agriculture industry in the Upper Cumberland.

“Beef Cattle like in Van Buren County is like so many of the Upper Cumberland counties,” Binkley said. “Beef production is our top agriculture commodity and we have several beef farmers.”

Binkley said the previous years the beef summit had an attendance of over 150 people. Binkley said the cattle-producing industry works better when they work together.

“We all do county programming through our own counties and we like to once a year gather together in a central location for our producers in the Upper Cumberland so they can see that there are other producers out here in other counties doing the exact same thing that I am. They can learn from each other and that way everybody benefits.”

Binkley said the extension wants to give farmers the best information possible. A dinner will be provided at the event. The summit runs from 5:30pm-8pm Tuesday.
