Local Fire Departments cautioning individuals using alternative heating sources during cold days.
Cookeville Battalion Chief Cliff Venters said the concern occurs when the power goes out and people look for ways to stay warm.
“Some of the things that we were worry is making sure that if you use any kind of heater that uses fuel, of course, it’s going to produce carbon monoxide and heat,” Venters said. “Of course, we like to make sure that any heating device is three feet away from any other object.”
Venters said another potential issue to look out for are the older wall-mounted heaters, which can be found in many older homes. He said even if turned off, some have an emergency setting that kicks on if it gets to a certain low temperature.
Venters also recommends making sure heaters are not plugged into surge protectors. He said many fires start because the heating devices will overload the plugs.
