The Cookeville Energy Department asking customers to reduce their electricity usage due to high energy loads caused by low temperatures.
The department shared a message from TVA requesting all non-essential loads be curtailed to prevent any further energy reductions. The message said some quick and easy ways to reduce usage are to turn everything off when leaving a room, lower the thermostat to 68°F, and wear additional layers to stay warm.
The message also said customers should set ceiling fans to spin clockwise so they push warm air down and avoid using washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, and other large appliances until the warmest part of the day when the demand for heating is lower. The request to limit power usage was extended to residential, commercial, and industrial customers alike.
TVA said temperatures usually do not reach a level that affects the public but the next day or two will be extremely cold across the Tennessee Valley. The message explained TVA’s Emergency Load Curtailment Program and showed that a request like this only comes after TVA has done what it can to reduce electric loads in its own facilities.
