Election Commission Resumes Ordinance Discussion

The Putnam County Election Commission will resume its discussion this afternoon on overturning a Cookevile City Council rezoning decision.

The council rezoned property on West 9th Street and North Franklin to allow for a 160 unit student housing development.

A Cookeville resident has submitted a petition requesting a referendum on the August ballot to overturn the council vote. The Commission tabled the discussion last month because city and state rules differ on such a referendum.

State law requires 15 percent of the registered voters to sign a petition for a referendum to be called or roughly 2,320 people. The city charter requires the petition to be signed by 25 percent of voters based on the last municipal election or about 1,339 residents.

The Commission’s monthly meeting will be held at 1:00pm Friday at the Commission Office.
