Effler says, “TBI Investigating is Standard Procedure.”

Eighth District Attorney Jared Effler said asking for a TBI investigation for Saturday night’s Clarkrange shooting is standard.

Effler said TBI provides an unbiased third party to interview and review evidence for the situation.

“That is standard operating procedure for our office to request TBI,” Effler said. “Any time there is an officer involved shooting involving local law enforcement agencies.”

Effler said the local police department involved in such a shooting is not allowed to investigate their own officer. The TBI will share their evidence with Effler, so he can determine if further action is needed.

Fentress County Sheriff’s Office received notice Saturday night that Gregory Lee Turnure was armed with a knife, a hatchet and a pipe. He threatened to harm himself and others. He refused to drop his weapons and attempted to strike an officer after refusing orders and being tased. A deputy fired and Turnure was pronounced dead on the scene.
