Early Voting Begins For Celina Mayor and Alderman Seats

Early voting began today in Clay County for the office of Celina Mayor and City Aldermen before the June 1 election day.

Election Administrator Monica Davis said early voting is open at 145 Cordell Hull Drive until May 27.

“We will check them in when they come in, it’s pretty simple,” Davis said. “We’ll just give them a piece of paper to sign, well actually they’ll sign about three times and they’ll go back to the early voting machine. The lines are very short right now.”

Davis said Celina residents just need to bring a photo ID and masking restrictions have been relaxed. She said the polling place is open from 9:00 AM-4:00 PM on Monday through Friday with a lunch break between noon to 1:00 PM. Saturday voting will run from 9:00 AM-Noon on Saturday.

Three candidates are listed for the Celina Mayor election:

Tonya Spears (Incumbent Mayor)

Luke M Collins

Micheal E. Boles

Six candidates are listed for the three Celina Alderman seats:

Dawn Dale

Winton A Dillon

Ron Haston

Jennings Trader Hill

Justin “Rooney” Rich

Lester Kenny Westmoreland

Davis said that early voting has slowed down since the rush to the polls seen in 2020. Davis said that while COVID restrictions have been relaxed at the polls, there are still precautions in place to help residents feel safe.

“They can wear masks if they choose to, we do have some available if somebody needs some,” Davis said. “We still have the hand sanitizer and we are still cleaning the machines after every use. It’s a lot more relaxed than it was, we just ask for no social gathering in the hallway or anything.”

Early voting will end on May 27, with election day set for June 1. Davis said that property rights owners are eligible to submit absentee ballots.
