Dogwood Park Fountain Remains Closed

Cookeville officials continue to follow state guidelines by keeping the Dogwood Park fountain closed.

Cookeville Mayor Ricky Shelton said keeping people physically distanced is the main reason for keeping the fountain closed at this time.

“Personally, I know people who really enjoy that fountain and the playground,” Shelton said. “It would be a great place to have for the kids to get out and enjoy. You gotta figure out the whole physical distancing of things and how you manage that, facilitate that or control that. It would be virtually impossible to control.”

Shelton said social distancing is not a law, but rather the only proven way to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Shelton said he hopes the people of Cookeville follow guidelines once the fountain reopens.

Shelton said Leisure Services Director Rick Woods and City Manager James Mills will revisit reopening the Dogwood Park fountain when the state updates their guidelines for splash pads. That guidance is expected next week.
