DeKalb West School welcomes Seth Willoughby as its new Assistant Principal.
Willoughby previously served as a biology teacher at DeKalb County High School for the past seven years. He said for the last year he’s taken part in a program with Tennessee State University for aspiring assistant principals.
“The longer that I’ve been in education I’ve learned that the leaders of your schools have such an impact on the students they’re around,” Willoughby said. “And can really, really help students to grow and become successful people as they get older in life.”
Willoughby said his initial work will be to set a good foundation for connecting with students and other faculty members. He said the work begins with the students, which he said ultimately guides every decision.
Willoughby said while there may be many differences in the needs of students, their well-being will be at the forefront of everything he does.
“In this first year for me it’s just observing maybe where some improvements can be made,” Willoughby said. “But for the most part, I’m really focusing on building relationships with the students and the staff within the school and creating a good solid foundation. So ultimately if we ever do eventually want or need to change anything we have the buy-in because that trust is there.”
