DeKalb Service Society Asking For Donations For “Blast From The Past” Prom

The DeKalb County High Service Society now accepting donations for their Blast from the Past prom.

Comprehensive Development Classroom Teacher Aimee Cantrell said the prom came about to give students who cannot attend the standard prom an opportunity to have their own prom.  Cantrell said a student originally pitched the idea to Service Society and from there they just kind of took off with it.

“And we crown all the kids king and queen so they all go home with a crown,” Cantrell said. “And then of course the local flower shops they donate corsages and boutonnieres. I mean, they just really enjoy it.”

Cantrell said they have tons of food and they may do an ice-cream sunday bar this year in keeping with the Blast from the Past theme. The prom also rents a limo.

“So we rent that for three hours and they take them around town,” Cantrell said.  “And they can pretty much do that as many times as they like.”

Cantrell said they have a DJ and dancing. She said the prom hosts around 40 kids between the Comprehensive Education students and their peers from the service society who attend as dates.

“I mean it’s just a blast for them,” Cantrell said. “It is just so fun just to watch them and how excited that they get about it.”

People can mail donations to DeKalb County High School to the attention of Sarah Young or Aimee Cantrell. Checks should be made payable to DCHS Service Society.
