Dekalb Senior Anglers Prepare For Weekend

The Dekalb County fishing team is competing in its third competition this weekend on Old Hickory Lake and angling duo Mason Taylor and Wesley Kent said they have done their due diligence to have a big weekend.

Seniors Taylor and Kent have been a fishing duo for almost four years and said Taylor said so far this year it has not been their time. He said they have spent hours the last few days preparing for their biggest tournament of the year.

“It’s a tough fishery,” Kent said. “You know, I mean it’s shallow waters, got a lot of pressure going on because there’s so many tournaments consistently here. Overall, it’s a fun fishery. You’re going to catch a lot of fish, but a lot of little ones.”

Kent said this is a tournament that they want to win due to their preparation and the size of the tournament. The anglers spent the last three days on the water scouting the waters and game planning for this weekend.

“We thought to ourselves the week, that the lower to middle is going to be more pressured because they had a tournament today out in the middle of the lake,” Kent said. “So, we kind of talked to ourselves before and was like ‘where’s the least pressured areas?’ and kind of put that as a factor and kid of want and did that and it seems to be paying off.”

The duo said they try to go out and practice for a few hours at least twice a week. Taylor said since they are seniors and this is their last high school season, they are balancing trying to win with trying to have fun.

“There is a whole bunch of excitement this year,” Taylor said. “We’re definitely trying to do the best we can and we’re very competitive and want to win. We’re also trying to sit back and take it in and have fun and enjoy it too.”

The Dekalb County anglers head to Cedar Creek Marina this weekend to compete with 119 other teams.
