The UCHRA/UCDD Executive Committee will consider auctioning some 110 acres that once housed a DeKalb County group home.
The Indian Mounds Residential Center for Boys closed last year due to COVID. Executive Director Mark Farley said reusing the property for services was not an option due to the remoteness.
“Its in a very remote area of DeKalb County, which was great when it was a boy’s home, but for anything else as far as delivering services, it is so remote it would be hard to make it feasible,” Farley said.
Farley said the matter will be up for approval next week when the Executive Committee meets. Farley said the agency has already seen great interest in the property.
“There are some attaching land owners that are very interested in it as well as other facilities that might look to grow and expand into our area,” Farley said. “I think there’s quite a bit interest into it. We’ll just have to wait and see.”
Farley said a house and adjoining building are also located on the property. Farley said as a governmental entity, a public auction would be the safest avenue to sell.
“That way you don’t have to worry about any appearances of doing some kind of sweetheart deal,” Farley said. “By doing a public auction, you know what the true value of that day what the property is.”
Farley said COVID closed the facility since most of the residents housed were there by court order.
