The Dekalb County 4-H Club is bringing its summer camp back in a new way.
Dekalb County 4-H Agent Leigh Fuson said that instead of regular camp, 4-H is going to be bringing the fun directly to the campers with its “Traveling Road Show” style-camp.
“They’re going to be packing up a trailer full of activities bringing them to the individual counties,” Fuson said. “They’re going to have some arts and crafts, tie dye t-shirts, they’re going to have inflatable versions of some of our traditional camp activities.”
Fuson said campers will be able to do inflatable archery, inflatable axe-throwing, and inflatable ga-ga ball.
“It’ll be a day to be unplugged, no electronics, no video games, cellphones, those kinds of things,” Fuson said. “They’ll just get to be outside for the day and get to hang out with other people their age and experience some new things.”
Since camp is a different than previous years, Fuson said she hopes the fun the kids have will inspire them to come back to 4-H’s regular camp next year, and maybe even inspire them to get more involved with the club.
“When you hear ‘4-H’ you think of the farming and the sewing and those types of things but there really is something for everybody–it doesn’t matter what background they’re from, whether they’re a farm kid or a city kid, it doesn’t matter there is something for everybody,” Fuson said. “It really does teach them valuable life skills that will help them into adulthood.”
Dekalb County’s 4-H camp for 4th-7th graders will be on Saturday, May 14th with drop-off between 8 a.m. to 8:45 a.m., and pick-up between 4 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Registration is $25, and closes on June 1st
