Déjà Vu? Man Wounds Same Intruder in Same Place for Second Time

Call it a case of déjà vu as a Monterey homeowner shot and wounded an intruder for the second time Monday evening.

According to Monterey Police Chief Bill Randolph, Matt Lane, 36, attempted to enter the home of 53-year-old Kip Powell, just 18 days after the first incident.

Powell fired a shot from a 22-caliber handgun at Lane before calling police, but wasn’t sure if the bullet had made contact.

However, MPD later received a call for a man with a gunshot wound to the shoulder, which happened to be Lane. He was transported to the hospital for treatment and has since been released.

Lane and Powell have met in the past as Lane broke into Powell’s home on Aug. 24 looking for an unidentified woman. That situation ended with a similar result, as Powell shot Lane in the shoulder in self defense.

Neither of the men face charges from the Monday incident but Randolph said the situation is still under investigation. MPD is gathering information to possibly present to the District Attorney’s office.
