Local Day Cares Trying To Serve

Concern about COVID-19 and the need for social distancing. The need to work. Upper Cumberland day care centers are trying to serve local families and keep children safe.

Creative Learning Child Care Director Laura Wheeler said her day care has seen an enrollment decrease.

“Our enrollment is about half of what we normally have because some of the parents are keeping their children home just to be safe, but we’re still open right now,” Wheeler said.

As part of their safety precautions, the day care is not allowing parents to come inside. Wheeler said the facility is also sanitizing children as they come in and routinely washing their hands.

Kids Putnam Executive Director Latonya Mott said their enrollment numbers have remained the same.

“Over 50 percent of our parents work at the hospital (they’re nurses) or they work for the health department,” Mott said. “We also have several who work for DCS so they’re still working. So so far it hasn’t affected us too much because the parents still have to go to work and that’s the reason why we’ve stayed open.”

Mott said the only change they’ve seen is a decrease in infant care.

Mott said they disinfect toys regularly and steam the carpets every day. Both day cares will not allow parents inside the building for health concerns.
